The lure of working from home might have been exciting and convenient in the beginning, but how do you maintain this excitement and keep your staff engaged, especially post-COVID? Anyone who has worked from home for a long time knows that this novelty can wear off and the struggle to maintain high levels of productivity whilst also maintaining a healthy work life balance can have an impact on the employees’ happiness and satisfaction. To ensure that the overall performance of the business does not suffer, it is important to keep remote workers motivated and engaged. Employing simple tips and methods can go a long way to keeping your remote team happy and productive.

Improve the Overall Communication

One of the continual challenges of remote working is how to communicate effectively in a non-face-to-face setting. Constant video conferences on the other hand can produce fatigue and feel wasteful especially if the content can be condensed into an email. Therefore, you need to strike a balance between the two to ensure clarity in communication. Encourage both formal emailing as well as informal communication through a messaging platform, check in regularly and keep employees in the loop to remind them that they are an integral part of the organization and make them feel connected and clear on what’s happening.

Set Clear Expectations

Following closely on the heels of communicating with intent is having clear goals. Some of your remote team may struggle to prioritize their work and feel uncertain about what they need to achieve. As a result, having clear expectations and communicating these expectations will help them feel prepared enough to focus on the goals and tasks needed to achieve these goals. This will go far in improving their overall efficiency and productivity.

Give recognition and rewards

Keeping your remote team happy also lies in the simple things. Ask them what they need and be flexible in accommodating their needs whether in terms of additional training, change in routine, sending them remote care packages or even upgrading their hardware among other things. This will help them perform better. Another way is to recognize and reward great work. Making sure your recognition of their wins is highly visible will help the workers feel valued and keep them engaged and motivated. This will focus on outcomes rather than when tasks are being done, relieving pressure on the employees and therefore making them feel more at ease when working.

There you have it, a few simple tips to help motivate your remote workers. Remote working is here to stay so it is important that employees remain highly engaged and productive which will in turn improve the organisations performance.
